Star Trick is the first part of the thirteen episode of the series Heathcliff and Dingbat. This is based on Heathcliff, rather than Dingbat. It is followed by second part of the episode The Big Fish Story.

Synopsis[]

Heathcliff takes part in the audition held for the "Super Puss" advertisement.

Plot[]

A female Persian cat is walking down the street with groceries in her hand. Suddenly, a gang of mean alley cats consisting of a little black cat, a lanky yellow cat, and a large brown cat called Darwad, who is the leader of the group, blocks her passage. The brown male cat attempts to snatch the bag from the female cat, causing the bag to rip making all the groceries to spill in ground. The girl cat bursts in tears, while the brown cat tells her to get over herself. A moment later, the characters notice a flying superhero cat called Super Cat, who comes to the scene. Super Cat beats up the Dirty Derwad and his goons, As Derwad's two feline pals retreat out the fight, Super Cat grabs Derwad and turns his tail clockwise, making Derwad walk away like a toy soldier. The female compliments Super Cat being heroic, as Super Cat pulls out a "FFFT Cat Food" box as a part of an advertisement on TV.

Heathcliff and Mrs. Nutmeg are watching the advert on television. At one moment, Heathcliff elects to show that he can perform stunts attractive for TV audience. To prove his words, he shows off with swashbuckling skills, using a small broom in lieu of a rapier. Heathcliff swings at a chandelier, holds on to a pole and inside, under the rug, and finishes fencing at a dresser. Heathcliff finds a newspaper that announces an audition held by the the Stellar Studios in search for a cat for the role of "Super Puss!". Heathcliff heads towards the studio and drops the newspaper for Mrs. Nutmeg to read. She comes along with him.

In the Stellar Studios, the Super Puss auditions are being held. The black cat (who appeared earlier in the episode) is juggling four plates, but fails to impress the director due to all the plates shattering on the ground. The director tells the cat that they may call him or not. He then calls for the next participant. Heathcliff with Mrs. Nutmeg along with the other cats their owners (including a grey cat named Butch and his owner, and the lanky yellow cat from earlier of the episode). Heathcliff marches to the director as the man pets the feline. Butch comments to what the director said. Director allows Heathcliff to start, the cat pulls at a top hat and a cane, then he calls the Maestro to play music. With the proper musical background, Heathcliff performs tap dance to top of each crates.

As the director is partially impressed saying that Heathcliff's performance is not bad, Mrs. Nutmeg replies to the director that her cat was good. Butch's owner also acknowledges the talented orange cat being quite talented, she then tells her own cat Butch to not stand there and do something. Butch rushes in the set, awhile Heathcliff' is busy doing his act, the bulky grey cat attempts to knock down his rival by using a mallet to smash the crates Heathcliff is standing on. But before Butch hits the crates, Heathcliff jumps up to ceiling and manipulates the ceiling pipeline system to sprinkle Butch's head. Heathcliff spins on the ceiling pipes and leaps down. Mrs. Nutmeg is expressing her concern, then Heathcliff pulls out a umbrella off his top hat and lands safely. Being most impressed, the director is proud to say that Heathcliff would their next "Super Puss". Butch's Owner plans to help her cat win by sabotaging Heathcliff's scene.

The Director assigns Heathcliff with the following scene - a helicopter is holding Heathcliff on a rope, while the director and cameraman direct for the first scene in a blimp and the female cat (who appeared earlier in the episode) is seen in top of a snowy mountain. As arranged in the script, Heathcliff heads to save her. Meanwhile, Butch and his owner are behind flying in a cape, Grandma notifies Heathcliff that there behind him, Heathcliff comments then the rope up and down for Butch to miss cutting his cape with scissors, Heathcliff pours water over the cape Butch and his owner are holding, the cape shrinks and thus they both plummet down the ground, Heathcliff rescues the damsel in distress as she shows her gratitude with a compliment him, Heathcliff unintentionally drops the damsel in distress to show off Kitty Krackles, as the director is very happy that Heathcliff is doing a great job for sponsor the product, when he reminds about the female, Heathcliff realized that she is falling down.

While she yells for help, Heathcliff pours Kitty Krackles that fall past Toots to the ground. Heathcliff then add the liquid cream that is poured on the female cat to the Kitty Krackles in the ground, which gains moisture and grows, which allows Toots safe landing. The female cat begins to question what was Heathcliff's way of saving her, Heathcliff cuts the rope that holds him, and falls down into the moist food crater occupied by Toots. As Toots smittens with affections with Heathcliff with hug calling him a hero, Mrs. Nutmeg comes to her precious. before the proud director congrats him and tell him, he'll do the next scene with him overpowering thirty gorillas to then rescue the gal once again, but Mrs. Nutmeg refuses the offer and carries Heathcliff back home. The director shrugs as Heathcliff replies "She's right you now, thirty gorillas is hardly a match with Super Puss Heathcliff" he then laughs as the episode comes to an end.

Trivia[]

  • The cat food commercial is likely inspired by the original Heathcliff comic strips that involved cat food.
  • The female actress cat in this episode is similar to Sonja, but she is a original character.
  • According to the model sheet, one of the minor characters being the cat owners is supposed to be Sonja's owner (Herb Jablonski) in the episode, he appears to be the owner of the lanky yellow cat.
    • This making the first and only animated appearance of Sonja's owner, Herb Jablonski.
  • The gang of the bully cats bare a close resemblance to Lefty and Knuckles.
    • The three cats would reappear in the intro in Heathcliff and Marmaduke (with their colors being swapped except for the lanky cat).
