Riff-Raff (also known as Rif Raf in Les Entrechats) is one of the main characters from the series Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats. He is a member of the Catillac Cats and is known for being the leader of the gang. He is also in a relationship with Cleo.

Character Overview[]

Personality[]

Riff-Raff has lived in the streets of Westfinster for a majority of his life and has always desired of making it big. This desire if what became known into the Catillac Cats, a group consisting of his best friends. Although he has a short temper and a quick fighting attitude, can be lazy at times, he still acts as a fair gentleman to his love interest/girlfriend, Cleo, although he has cheated on her a few times, like in the episodes Kitten Around and The Big Break In. He also cares about his friends and goes out of his way to help them. In the episode Circus Beserkus, he let them stay for the night in his airplane home, then took them to a circus to cheer them up when their Cadillac went missing. When they found out the Cadillac was in the circus act, he helped them get it back. He also never leaves a cat behind. He, along with his friends, live in the Junkyard. While Hector, Wordsworth and Mungo live in the Cadillac, Riff-Raff lives alone in an old, modified airplane with a TV, pinball machine and hammock.

Family[]

Riff-Raff's brother Morton appears in the episode Cat in the Fat.

Riff-Raff's Mom[]

Riff-Raff's mother appears in the episode Riff-Raff's Mom.

Relationships[]

Cleo[]

Riff-Raff has a really strong relationship with Cleo and is always there to protect her and to give her what she wants. Riff-Raff acts like a gentleman toward Cleo, especially in the episode Kitten Around, where he gives her flowers and a beautiful date in the Junkyard. However, also in this episode, Roxie is introduced and becomes Riff-Raff’s new date, which eventually comes to Cleo’s attention. This is what causes anger to stir in her emotions and to fight Roxie to win Riff-Raff’s heart. Their hiatus was eventually resolved and the three of them become friends (although Roxie never appears in this series again after this episode), which results in Cleo and Riff-Raff continuing their relationship.

Roxie[]

In the episode "Kitten Around", Roxie is wooed by Riff-Raff. Upon finding out that he was cheating on Cleo, Roxie and Cleo teamed up to thwart the two-timing tomcat.

Friends[]

Hector[]

Wordsworth W. Wordsworth[]

Mungo McMungo[]

He's friends with this big guy. Riff-Raff was saved by Mungo from three other cats in the beginning of the episode, "Christmas Memories", and Riff-Raff is well aware of how strong Mungo is in some episodes, and quite smart in others.

Bush[]

Though he gets hassled by the sheepdog (while trying to meet Cleo), he does find Bush useful: In the episode, The Meowsic Goes Round & Round, Bush helps Riff-Raff sniff out the thieves who had stolen Hector, Wordsworth, and Mungo's musical instruments. But even Bush has his moments where he can get pretty tough: in the episode "Cleo Moves In", he helps Cleo strong-arm the gang and Leroy into cleaning up the junkyard.

Enemies[]

Leroy[]

Leroy the junkyard dog serves to be Riff-Raff's foil and vice-versa. Even though it is a friends/foes in some episodes, they do make an effort to be peaceable, though the effort is a strained one. However, in the episode "Leroy Gets Canned" Riff-Raff not only gets Leroy fired in the first part of the episode, but helps him get even with a far worse junkyard dog who was selling junk for inflated prices.

Cartoon[]

Voice Actor[]

Riff-Raff is voiced by Stanley Jones, who is also known for voicing Milkman and Wordsworth. In the French version of the show called Les Entrechats, Riff-Raff was voiced by Patrick Poivey.

Trivia[]

  • Riff-Raff has made two cameos in the Heathcliff comic strip on July 20th, 2016 and February 20th, 2018.
  • Riff-Raff is the only character from the Catillac Cats cartoon to have the same girlfriend (Cleo) for more than one episode.
  • The only time where Riff-Raff and Cleo (with pink hair) makes an appearance in a Heathcliff segment is in the episode Spike's Cousin, where they can be seen with a crowd of cheering cats. However neither are seen with Heathcliff on screen.
  • Heathcliff and Riff-Raff only appear on screen together in the beginning of the end credits where Riff-Raff snatches his hat back from Heathcliff.
  • In some bumpers, Riff-Raff mentions Heathcliff and in a television promo for the series, Heathcliff mentions him and Cleo, which could imply that they do know each other either seeing each other off screen or never caring to see each other or have just met briefly and Heathcliff just hangs with the Catillac Cats when Riff Raff is out of town.
  • He was mentioned twice briefly in the Heathcliff segment Soap Box Derby, when Wordsworth says "Hey, but we can't play because Riff-Raff's away." and Hector replies "Who needs him?". This implies that in some or most Heathcliff episodes with Hector, Wordsworth, and Mungo, other than Spike's Cousin, that Riff-Raff is usually going out somewhere with Cleo likely cruising. It's evident in the episodes Repo Cat and Cruisin' for a Bruisin'.
  • Although he hangs out a lot more with Hector, Wordsworth and Mungo, he tends to be by himself shown in the episode Circus Beserkus. Also, his relationship with isn't necessarily better. While Heathcliff beats them up a lot and works against more than he does, Riff-Raff makes them do more of his dirty work he can do himself. Both cats are equally bossy. Nonetheless, both cats remain friends with the trio.
  • It is unknown why Riff-Raff and Cleo only appeared in the episode Spike's Cousin, though it is suspected that McNaught Syndicate (the then-owner of the Heathcliff comic strip) did not want these characters in it. However, this may not be the case as Inspector Gadget made several cameos in both segments. It's possible they feared would have to bring more characters in and eventually compromised allowing Hector, Wordsworth and Mungo in, who were absent in season 2 (not counting title cards). Another possibility could be that the writers of both shows could not find a way to write an episode with both them probably for being too similar or that they'd fight for a long time. It's even possible there had been disagreements between both creators as well as some creative competition. They could have also feared confusion among fans. According to the book "Les séries de notre enfance" the reason they were not in the Heathcliff series was because when DiC entertainment (the makers of the Catillac Cats) when making their version of cat show much like Heathcliff, they feared that featuring Cleo and Riff-Raff in the Heathcliff segments would cause them to lose the rights to the characters despite featuring Hector, Wordsworth, and Mungo. Though it could also be why the latter three disappeared in season 2 of the Heathcliff segments.
  • Had the show continued, he and Heathcliff would have probably starred together, but the episodes were probably a set up to fans to want to watch the show more in hopes that Riff-Raff and Heathcliff would meet using the episode Spike's Cousin to possibly raise their hopes.
